Look, let's get this out of the way early: this was a 'white whale' purchase after years spent wondering if I'd ever try it. It is very, very good. Did I pour some out in a snifter to see what it looked like? Sure, after I drank from the can first as instructed. It's lovely in the glass and I didn't notice a huge change. But if keeping it in the can helps with the olfactory experience, so be it. One drawback to keeping it in the can is worrying about how much is left, which I think is a perfect metaphor for this beer. Don't let it's rarity scare you from enjoying it, nor it's status keep you from trying similar beers. Is this beer very, very good because I'd heard so much hype or because it's profile was exactly what one expects with a NEIPA? It's similar with Pliny; after years of hearing about it I finally tried some in San Francisco albeit in bottled form. That beer was also very, very good. But as I enjoyed Heady Topper, I realized I had encountered very similar flavors in other beers local to me. So, scratch HT off the list and move on to the next hazy DIPA. Yes, the cache counts for a lot, but that's the beauty of beer: with apologies to Zino Davidoff, the best beer to drink is the one you're enjoying right now.
