St. Amand is a superior example of the rarer Copper Biج¬re de Garde style. Containing only artesian well water, barley malt from the Champagne region and hops from Alsace.

First brewed in 1978, St. Amand is a little like a Belgian Brabant ale, yet there is a particular fresh fruitiness and a rough graininess that mellows a bit like a hint of whisky. It has hints of plum and sweet caramel malts. The grain is matched with old autumnal hops, not so much bitter as tannic like tea. The head is billowy tan with foamy lace. Absolutely delicious as an accompaniment to steak frites, veal and lamb chops, and with hearty bistro fare in general.
